As someone who travels full-time, I have much experience with travel rentals. I mean, I’ve rented 30 places within the last year and a half. Apart from my checklist, I focus on getting the best deal, so negotiating the terms of my next home is a necessary part of the process.

Whether you’re looking to rent a house, condo, or apartment for your next vacation or travel stay, here are some quick money-saving tips for negotiating your rental.

Negotiating Tips:

1. Ask for a Discount

It’s that simple. What’s the worst that can happen? The owner says no. What about if they say yes? Don’t miss the opportunity.

If you have a budget that you would like to stick to or a number that you find reasonable for the space, ask the owner if they can come down from the price.

Pro Tip: Owners are more willing to give discounts for stays longer than a week, last-minute bookings, and rentals during the low-season. Start by negotiating 25% off your rental and be willing to meet somewhere in the middle.

2. Negotiate Other Items

If the owner can’t budge on the price, see if there are amenities or other items of value that can be added to your stay for free. For example, a free night or free parking. If they charge a one-time cleaning fee, ask if it can be waived.

Also, don’t hesitate to ask if you can check-in early or checkout later.

Pro Tip: If your place doesn’t include a cleaning service, ask if this service can be added either at no cost or at a discount. Owners are more willing to include this service for stays longer than a week and the service is typically provided once a week. If not the service, see if cleaning products can be supplied.

3. Build Relationships

I have built authentic relationships with owners during my travels. What this means, is that not only is one creating connections and possible friendships, but if and when there’s a return to that destination; you have a reliable place to stay and an established history that may result in savings.

Pro Tip: Building relationships with property owners can also turn into business opportunities.

In negotiations, the aim is for both parties to mutually benefit. A win-win situation! Therefore, don’t be afraid to speak up and assert yourself, be willing to negotiate, and finally, learn when to walk away from something that doesn’t work for you. This process will give you the confidence to negotiate in all areas of your life. It’s an important skill to possess.
