Are you thinking about taking a solo trip but feeling apprehensive?

The thought of being alone in a foreign place can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Good thing is, if you’re willing to take the chance it can be a life-changing experience.

In this post, I share some tips that prepare you for your first solo trip. Make sure to read to the end and download the free checklist that I have for you. It provides actionable steps to help you take control and build the confidence you need for this wonderful adventure!

1. Do everyday things on your own

If you live alone it’s easier to gauge whether solo travel is for you. A person that lives alone usually spends bouts of time by themselves and are responsible for making important decisions. Qualities essential to solo travel.

However, if you don’t live alone or spend much time by yourself, I recommend introducing these activities to your routine: go shopping, eat at a restaurant, visit a coffee shop, listen to a live band on a Friday night etc.

2. Sign up for a group class

Booking a group class minus your girlfriends allows you to see how you would handle a social environment without the comfort of having familiar people around. It allows you to test how you interact with strangers and challenges you to be open, even if awkward at first.

I challenge you to strike up a conversation during your first group class!

3. Explore locally

Whether a 24-hour staycation or exploring a nearby city for a day, taking a mini-trip shows you how you would handle a full day alone. It also provides you with the comfort of being nearby and the experience of traveling solo. This is different when comparing it to a few hours of alone time and you get to see how content you are with your own company for a longer period.

Plan an itinerary that offers a mix of alone time and social activities. Try a walking tour, visiting a museum, a lunch picnic at the park, and a night cap at a bar.

4. Write down how you feel

This is a new journey for you so taking to a journal to write down your thoughts is a good way to express your feelings as well as take stock on how these experiences are going for you.

Be open and honest. How do you feel when you’re alone? Are you intimidated? Do you feel joyful? anxious? adventurous? This exercise helps you determine if this is something you would like to do more of going forward.

5. Plan your time off

Could you believe that more than 50% of American workers don’t take their time off? Allocate your vacation time whether you use it to relax, make memories with family, or take that first solo trip. This is time you’ve earned, deserve, and need.
